It seems lady luck is finally shining over Pakistan’s cricket team. After defeating Australia on Australian soil after 12 years, the Pakistan ODI cricket team’s Babar Azam became the first Pakistani to score 1,000 career runs in 21 ODI innings. He equals a record that was set 37-years ago and puts his name in the history books of cricket. Well done Babar!

Included in this exclusive club are Sir Viv Richards (West Indies), Kevin Pietersen (England), Jonathan Trott (England) and Quinton de Kock (South Africa) who scored 1,000 runs in 21 innings. The inclusion of Babar Azam in this list will certainly be a morale booster for Pakistan cricket. The 22-year old right-hand batsman made his ODI debut against Zimbabwe at Lahore on May 31, 2015, while played his first Test match against the West Indies at Dubai in October 2016.

On January 19, 2017, when Pakistan played the 3rd ODI of its series against Australia at Perth, Babar Azam scored 84 (100) while scoring four boundaries and a six. Along with opener Sharjeel Khan who scored 50 off 71 balls, both gave Pakistan a decent target of 263 in 50 overs.

Babar Azam’s shot selection and his temperament on the pitch during the last many ODIs are a testament to his batting skills and hints at him becoming a long-serving player of Pakistan’s ODI squad. However, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the team management must ensure that they do not keep moving Azam up and down the order and let him play at one spot so he can focus on her career while adding value to the team.
